REMARKABLE photos capture the majesty of a subterranean Chinese village which was once home to more than two million people.
There are believed to be more almost 10,000 underground homes and more than 100 courtyards in Sanmenxia city, Henan province.

The courtyard homes, called Yaodongs, have had six generations living under their roofs for over 200 years
The public will soon be able to peruse its intricate tunnels and "unique architecture", according to People's Daily Online.
Known as Yaodongs, the dwellings are believed to have housed as many as six generations of relatives for hundreds of years.
They built the courtyards under ground level to keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
They remain "of great historical, scientific and artist value", according to experts at Easy Tour China (ETC).

Each dwelling has its own sitting room and some even have a separate shed for their livestock
They claim it takes as many as three years of digging to create an underground cave house of around seven metres.
The best ones - sometimes dating back to more than 200 years - are apparently found in the villages of Renma and Miaoshang in Shanxian Town.
They may seem simple - even rustic - but they come with all the amenities of a modern, Western home.
Courtyards are said to come with separate bathrooms, sitting rooms, bedroom ans even a livestock shed.
Experts say the underground villages remain "of great historical, scientific and artist value"

Sanmenxia - the city the underground village lies in - roughly translates as "Gorge of the Three Gateways"
"Richer local people renovate their courtyards with modern comforts and decorations," ETC reports.
Most have a special kitchen with seven stoves, all of which heat up to different temperatures, which means the chef can use them to prepare different dishes.
Sanmenxia - roughly translated as "Gorge of the Three Gateways" - gets its name from the two islands which split the Yellow River into three parts.

这里的房子看起来很简单，但都有独立的卧室和起居区。看起来，是比普通的农家乐标配要更周全一些。
借助无人机拍摄，我们可以看到三门峡市数以千计的地下住宅，拼图成了一座座神奇的小村庄。
这些村民介绍说，建造一个地下四合院，要向下深挖七米左右，整个施工过程需耗时三年之久。当地最古老的建筑可以追溯到200多年前，重点聚集在陕州区人马和庙上村。这些乡下民居可能看起来简陋，完全是农村风格 ，但现代西方家庭的生活设施一应俱全，包括独立浴室、客厅、卧室等，甚至还有牲口棚。
当地的村民已经准备好了大锅饭。
这些民居十分坚固，从院子内部向外看，有一种说不出的安全感。
这些小院都是名副其实的围城，大家可以抽空进入其中，体验一下被包围的感觉。虽然当地的游客络绎不绝，还不至于拥挤到光剩人影，不见美景的那步田地。这是三门峡市陕州区的地下住宅的模样。
公众将很快就可以前往这些小阁楼里面自由探索，体验错综复杂的隧道系统了。这些地下民居彼此之间相互贯通，进去游玩还会有参加地道战的兴奋。
据了解，富裕的当地人以现代、舒适为标准修缮庭院。大多厨房都有7个火炉，分别用来烹饪热度不同的菜肴，专业厨师已经做好露一手的准备了。三门峡，顾名思义即两块巨石把黄河分成了三股支流。据说，夏朝创建者、传说中的统治者“大禹”曾用神斧连劈三次，才劈开阻挡黄河水流的山峦，解决了当地洪水横流的问题。在水患平定之后的四千年里，当地就一直有人生活。
